Coach East begins his 30th season as the Merrillville Pirates
boys' basketball coach. This will be his 48th year in
roundball coaching in Indiana and his 41st as a head coach.
Jim has been a head coach at four different high school
including Connersville where he was an assistant for six years
and head coach plus athletic director for five years. After
three years at Lawrenceburg, Jim moved from the Ohio River to
Lake Michigan to assume the head job at Merrillville in 1980.
His coaching career has also included trips to four continents
(Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe) giving clinics and
coaching national teams. Jim has also been an Indiana All-Star
basketball coach and an inductee into the Delaware County
Athletic Hall of Fame, the Merrillville Coaches' Hall of Fame
and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Jim retired as a teacher at MHS at the end of 2002 and his
wife of 49 years, Marlene, has joined him in retirement after
13 years of teaching English at Pierce Middle School. Jim and
Marlene have two daughters, Kelly and Kara, and five
grandchildren (Casady, Katelyn, Kristopher, Blake and Bryce)
and one great grandchild (Macy).
