Dear Merrillville School Corporation Parents, Students, and Staff
Please be advised that on Thursday, April 2, 2020, Dr. McCormick, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, at Governor Holcomb’s press conference, announced that Indiana Public Schools will continue distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. You will receive an updated instructional calendar for the remainder of the school year as we move forward with continuing our distance/e-Learning instructional plan.
Our current instructional calendar has Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays as e-Learning days and Tuesdays and Thursdays as preparation days. Preparation days are defined as days students won’t receive new instruction, but use these days to catch up on work. For students in grades Kdg. – 11th, distance learning/e-Learning will continue according to the present procedures at this time. More information will be sent within the next few weeks regarding the procedures and dates for the turn-in of homework.
The Indiana Department of Education is working with all schools to help our high school seniors graduate on time. Each high school senior will be contacted by the high school administration or their guidance counselor to work with them to fulfill their credit requirements and graduate as planned. In the meantime, current 12th-grade classes will also continue according to the current distance learning/e-Learning plan and students should continue to stay engaged in the assigned work.
Our students are doing an amazing job during these challenging times and I am so proud of their efforts. I know I speak for everyone here at Merrillville Community School Corporation when I say we are heartbroken we can’t end the school year with our students back in the classrooms. This is not easy for our families, students, and it is not easy on our staff as they miss seeing their students each day.
Please know we are doing everything we can to provide the best experiences for our students. I will make sure I follow every state guideline-mandated. Take care. Be safe. Stay healthy. Follow the guidelines for social distancing. Be a part of the solution.
Nicholas G. Brown, Ed.S.
Superintendent of Schools
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians of Clifford Pierce Middle School,
Welcome to the CPMS family! Thank you for visiting our website to learn more about our Clifford Pierce Middle School community. We are so excited for the 2019-20 school year! Our staff is working hard to prepare engaging and rewarding learning experiences for all students. We look forward to seeing our returning 8th-grade families, and we are excited to get to know our new 7th grade families. At CPMS, we place a high value on our partnership with parents, families, and community and we invite you to be an active part of helping students to achieve their full potential.
We consider it a privilege to work with your kids every day to help them be their very best selves. We believe that each and every student has a gift to share with the world, and we work hard to unlock their highest potential. We have high expectations of our students, and we have high expectations of ourselves to help all CPMS students learn and grow into well-rounded citizens and critical thinkers. CPMS aims to develop leadership skills, social and emotional skills, and academic skills to prepare students for success not only in middle school but also in high school, career, relationships, and life-long learning.
It truly is an honor to work as the principal of CPMS. As many of you know, I’ve been a part of the district as an assistant principal and associate principal for many years. My educational experiences go beyond our district, having taught at the elementary and middle school levels. I am also an adjunct professor at one of the local universities. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University-Calumet Campus, my Middle School/Junior High Science endorsement, Masters of Elementary Education degree, and Administration Certification from Indiana University-Northwest Campus, and my Education Specialist degree Indiana Wesleyan.
In closing, our staff looks forward to continuing with the strong relationships built with returning families as well as new families within our school community. If you ever have a concern or a question, please do not hesitate to call or email me. Together our communication efforts will enhance our students’ success! We hope that you will have a great school year, and want you to know that we are here to serve you.
