Greetings Pirate Families and Friends,

My name is Nick Brown and I am excited to serve as your Superintendent!

I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve Merrillville students, families, and the community as Superintendent of the Merrillville Community School Corporation.  Our school corporation is dedicated to fulfilling our vision of every student, every day, whatever it takes. The Merrillville Community School staff understands that student learning depends on high-quality instruction and curriculum, aligned with clear learning targets. Our teachers, administrators, and support staff are committed to providing all students with a high-quality educational experience.

Merrillville Community School Corporation is committed to the students and parents of our community while working together in partnership to meet the needs of our students. We continue to work towards engaging our parents and community in the educational experience of our students.

As I reflect on the end of my first year at Merrillville School Corporation and prepare for the start of my second year, I have learned we have wonderful children in our community. I can honestly say that I am very impressed with our students and how hard they work. I had the privilege of attending countless outstanding school events. It is abundantly clear that Merrillville School Corporation is a great place to learn and grow.  Merrillville School Corporation is built on a history with rich traditions while maintaining a focus on the current and future needs of our students. Merrillville School Corporation is home to outstanding and dedicated teachers as well as exemplary academic, performing arts, athletic, and career & technical programs. We take great pride in the success of our students.

Students at Merrillville School Corporation have so many opportunities to participate in activities of interest to them at all levels.  Our five elementary schools provide a caring experience where teachers work to build relationships with each and every student.  The staff strives every day to build strong positive relationships with parents and students.  This partnering relationship is the foundation to the success of all our students.  The PTOs for our schools are actively engaged in providing support for our students and staff.  I have had the privilege of meeting with the PTO presidents several times through the year and thank them for all their volunteer efforts to support our schools.  I encourage every parent to participate with the PTO and support the success of all children.

Pierce Middle School offers the opportunity to take several high school courses so students can earn high school credit before their 9th-grade year. Additionally, our Middle and High School students have over 65 clubs, performing arts, and athletic teams to join.  Research has shown that students involved in school extracurricular activities feel more connected to the school and educational experience and may have higher academic performance, as well as, better attendance.

Many of our high school students graduate not only with a high school diploma but also with numerous college credits.  Merrillville High School provides college-level course offerings on site: 11 Advanced Placement (AP) courses and 35Dual Credit courses.

To serve you better, we now have a newly redesigned website, an updated Facebook page and many twitter accounts.  I welcome you to follow me on my Twitter page @MerrillvileSu3 as I try to highlight many wonderful activities occurring at Merrillville Schools.  Several of our administrators and departments also have twitter accounts that you may find informative and fun to follow.  We are striving to improve communication and parent engagement at all levels of our school district.

I encourage you to become involved in our schools to pass on the Merrillville Pirate Legacy to future generations, and to see first hand how Merrillville School Corporation is meeting the needs of all students!

Pirate Pride! Go Pirates!
