We, your Merrillville School Nurses, wanted to reach out to you and provide some information and reassurance to help you through this difficult time. These are clearly challenging times filled with uncertainty and concern that are impacting our entire community, and our country. Our vision during this time is that all students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn whether we are in a physical school building or in a home learning environment.
When we do reflect on what is happening in our world right now, please remember to remain calm and reassuring. Our children will react to both what we say and how we say it. We have the continued task of being role models for our kids in terms of our actions even more than our words which will help decrease levels of stress and anxiety. One way that we can be effective role models for our children is by following recommended guidelines for how to manage COVID-19 such as:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Disinfect common household items (like doorknobs, light switches and countertops)
- Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow
- Stay at home if you are sick
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick and avoid crowds
- Follow social distancing guidelines: stay at least 6 feet away from others, do not shake hands
Keeping a regular routine at home during this time is also crucial in helping children feel at ease but also promote physical health. Encourage your children to eat a well balanced diet, follow a bedtime schedule promoting enough sleep, drink plenty of water and get daily exercise.
We also wanted to thank the parents and caregivers for coming alongside us during these unprecedented times. We also want to give a big shout out to our students. Our students have had the courage to push through a new way of learning and have adapted so they can excel in their academic achievements. You truly are our little heroes.
We are all in this together! Teaming up to make things possible so that our loved ones stay safe and healthy but our children also continue learning and growing. Your nurses in the Merrillville School Corporation are here for you while we navigate through this new normal way of life. Please let us know if there is any way we can come alongside you and support you during this time.
