Mrs. Johnsen's 8th grade class started studying the Harlem Renaissance to get a feel of the art, history, and culture of the time period. They were allowed to use existing artwork as inspiration.
Students tried to emulate the style of the era and also needed to be aware of the color meanings that they selected to be used within their own creation. Students were encouraged to change the artwork to make it their own, even using different media. (This is an introductory course where they are still learning about artistic composition, so they were not penalized for copying content.*)
Students branched out to represent current issues as well. A few students chose to work on this project with other members of their family, a great way for families to spend time being creative together!
The 8th grade did an amazing job creating artwork inspired by the Harlem Renaissance genre.
