Social Services

The Merrillville Community School Corporation School Social Workers are present at every level K thru 12, servicing students, staff and families each school day. The primary role of the school social worker is to ensure that students are able to reach their full potential by providing supportive services that address the various social, emotional and situational barriers that may hinder a student’s learning.

Services are provided in the form of prevention, direct service and crisis intervention, ranging from working with students in large group settings to educate them about “bullying” to smaller groups specifically tailored to address students who may be having difficulty making friends.  A student can also been seen by a school social worker on an individual basis to address more serious issues that may directly or indirectly impact their ability to perform in the classroom.

Parents can also access a school social worker as a resource regarding concerns about their child’s behavior, family challenges/hardships and receive support in talking with your child about difficult topics and more.
