Please remember to frequently check your email as well as Skyward and our website at www.mvsc.k12.in.us for updated information. We are extending e-learning through May 1st in conjunction with the Governor's announcement to keep school buildings closed until that time. Thank you for support during this time.
March 16, 2020
Merrillville Community School Corporation Family,
These are obviously unprecedented circumstances that have brought us to this event. Closing school is never an easy decision. It is, however, a recommended strategy to protect the health and safety of our entire community from COVID-19, particularly the more vulnerable members of our community. I am so proud of how the entire Merrillville Community School Corporation staff and community are coming together during this challenging time. There are many unanswered questions. I hope the information below will help guide you through the next few weeks.
Below, we have addressed Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Many of these plans are being implemented for the very first time and may require slight modifications during the week. We appreciate your patience as we work through the process. We will continue to communicate during the week as new information becomes available. As always, we strongly encourage all students, families and staff to continue practicing good health hygiene to prevent the spread of any illness, including viruses.
The school offices will be open on Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th to answer questions and provide support. We ask that you first call the office to arrange a time to come into the school for any needs. The schools will be closed to the public from March 18th to April 10th. Parents will be required to call their school office or email the principal if they have a need. MEALS Student Meal Distribution Beginning tomorrow, March 17th through April 9th (except for spring break and Good Friday), breakfasts and lunches will be distributed to students from school cafeteria entrances and from buses at listed parks and churches between 11:30AM-1:30PM Mondays and Thursdays only. This week only (March 16-20), meal distribution will be Tuesday, March 17th and Thursday, March 19th. Effective Wednesday, March 18, 2020, teachers will post work for students in Google Classroom, ClassDojo or other learning management platforms such as Nearpod, SeeSaw or ClassKick. Students can use their electronic devices to access Google Classroom to complete their work. Fifth and sixth-grade students will be permitted to take their Chromebooks home. Students in Kindergarten-Grade 4, and Grade 7 - 12 can get their work through the normal methods their individual teachers use to communicate if the teacher is not using Google Classroom. Teachers will be available on the learning platforms to support students and answer questions throughout the week and during office hours 8:30AM and 3:00PM. If you do not have access to the internet, please contact your teacher to provide an educational packet.
PICKING UP PERSONAL ITEMS, MEDICINE
Personal items from school lockers or classrooms and/or medicine from the nurse’s office can be picked up on Tuesday, March 17th from 9AM to noon and 1PM to 2PM. Parents will need to check-in at the front office of your student’s school for procedures to retrieve items. Buildings will be closed to the public after Tuesday, March 17th and any remaining items will be available when we reopen.
Students who have special needs will be contacted by their teacher and/or service provider to make arrangements to ensure that their individual learning plans are met during our period of remote learning. Special education staff will hold office hours during remote learning days. Case conferences will be held via teleconference, and you will be invited to participate with the IEP team. If you have any questions throughout this time, please contact your child’s teacher directly through the established online platform, or through regular email.
