Merrillville Community School Corporation welcomed a new director of the technology and career & technical education (CTE) in December.
Bob Phelps joined the Pirate Family, bringing with him years of experience as a CTE instructor. He taught broadcasting and media in Porter County since 2006.
“I am thrilled to join the staff at Merrillville Community Schools as the director of technology and CTE,” said Mr. Phelps. “I am a proud father, husband and educator that believes all students should graduate high school with the technical and employability skills necessary to be successful.”
He said the positive reputation of the students, staff, and leaders in the Merrillville community inspired him to join the Pirate Family. His goal is to provide all teachers and students the resources and confidence they need to be successful.
“The position of director of technology is unique because it deals with instructional technology and preparing students for their careers,” he said. “I want to encourage educators to embrace technology and use it as one of the many tools we have to teach, train and mentor our students.
“My priority as an educator has always been to prepare students to be successful members of their community and to support themselves with a career they enjoy,” he said.
Mr. Phelps received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and director of CTE license from Ball State University and previously served as director of CTE at the Gary Area Career Center.
